Mental Health

About the Program

The mental health service at the VA New Jersey Health Care System provides consultation, evaluation, and treatment for a variety of issues that can impact emotional well-being.

We conduct research and training of psychiatric residents, psychology interns, physician assistant students, social work students and medical students to ensure state-of-the-art treatment.

Services Offered

Mental health services provided at the VA New Jersey Health Care System include treatments for —

  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • serious mental illness, including schizophrenia and bipolar illness
  • depression, sadness, grief
  • aggressive or self-harming behaviors
  • anxiety, worry, nervousness
  • addictive behaviors, including treatment for alcohol abuse and opioid substitution treatment (methadone) 
  • relationship problems
  • stress from medical problems and/or pain
  • emotional problems, such as managing anger
  • vocational issues
  • troublesome thoughts or ideas
  • confused thinking
  • memory problems
  • special services for older veterans requiring mental health care

We also provide outreach and treatment for homeless veterans.

Confidentiality

Mental health services are confidential. We will not talk to anyone about information you share unless you give written consent. Under federal law, a few exceptions to this rule exist. If you have questions, please ask your mental health consultant.
